I dont see what your all getting wound up about. Employers have a legal duty to protect their employees, no questions asked. Its no different to your employers sending you out to work with deffective equipment.

I fully understand what your saying and begrudgingly accept that we have decended into a liberal nanny state which is in itself disgusting and hard to swallow. I suppose its because as tree cutters we are a bit more old school and proud of it.

The amount of time teachers "actually" spend teaching, with all the holidays, short days etc, I fail to see how he could be exposed to much.

How does a full time joiner possible survive?

Too right. I remember getting a good hiding from my woodwork teacher for mucking about. He had a large beard, a combover and a very stinky pipe.

the woodwork teacher ay F------- Upper once stabbed the blackboard with a chisel rather than plunge it through the heart of an unruly pupil. :scared1:

Nanny state is a term used by those who don't need such a thing. It's broad stroke stuff, which doesn't take into account those individuals who need protecting or nurturing. Sure, there are anecdotes which back such a philosophy, but there are many stories never told in the red tops of things working out for the best.

I say red tops, as I'm pretty sure that's where the `nanny state' idea comes from. I prefer to think of it as a responsible state. The original story was spun to be included in ammunition against responsible state power. I'm sure that there's another story too, one from the woodwork teachers side. Who now has asthma. It would be difficult to be judgmental about a man I have never met. We don't know the full story.

Thanks very much. As an ex-service man, I think you can see where the state has responsibilities. In fact there are few examples of where the `nanny state' is needed as powerful as the disregard of soldiers returning from active duty, with or without parts missing. For Christ sake, who doesn't love their Nan? Shouldn't we take responsibility for our people on an individual, local and state level? Stop encouraging me. Dagmar might turn up.
