Two stroke mix for old saws

I have an old Dolmar 166 (i think, it doesn't have any stickers on it) that is designed to run on 20:1 fuel mix but this creates clouds of acrid blue smoke.

 

does anyone know if the ready made aspen fuels are ok to use in the saw? as it can't be doing my lungs any good.

 

I use this saw regularly on my alaskan sawmill and its a beast, much more powerfull than the MS660 i use at work.

This saw will have come out when there wasn't very good oil on the market, oil nowadays has come on leaps and bounds in quality and lubrication properties etc....

 

Some old saws say 25:1 but are run on 50:1 now due to better oils.

I have an old 266XP and run it on 50:1 no probs, like the last guy said it the oil quality thats improved.

 

I read up on early snowmobiles and if run at recommended mix they had problems but the locals ran them a bit lean on oil mix and they worked well.

I run my 076 on Aspen for milling with no problems. I also run a 1940s Allen Scythe on it, which originally specified 16:1 with SAE30.

 

As has been said, better oils, better lubrication and actually a bit more power as the mix is less lean. You may need to tweak the carb a bit.

Too true mate - I even have to strip off to get all the wood out of my pants and wash in the 'tin bath' before being allowed indoors.

 

joking aside Aspen has 20% lower CO fumes but it's still omitting a deadly gas
