One reason I use Aspen

If this product is such a marketable fuel, and as good as it says on the tin, (and I'm not saying it's not) how come Aspen have not placed it successfully in the big outlets such as B&Q . Surely it should be the sort of product they'd love to stock, and their buyers would be attracted to? If someone such as B&Q were to stock it it would give it credibility to the general public, as it would be ideal for fuelled tools that generally sit in sheds for months at a time between use. I'd have also thought that the potential customer base would be far larger than one or two people buying it here and there at small garden machinery outlets (no offence to the small garden machinery outlets either )

 

Aspen (or other alkylate) fuel is on the shelves of the B&Q equivalents in Scandinavia and much of continental Europe. In the UK, Aspen is marketed by Anglo American Oil Company Ltd - you really should direct the question to them

Probably because it would end up costing about £50 for 5 l by the time it was marked up.

 

I don's see why it should be any more expensive when sold by a large DIY chain, than when sold though specialist dealers.

 

Even so, at £3.50/litre is still a lot lower TCO than having to replace the chainsaw once a year, when stale fuel has caused the oil to separate seizing the saw which has been sitting on the shelf for 11 months, and disposing of the 4l of stale fuel too.

 

For home owners/infrequent users Alcylate fuel is ideal.

Selling to the big chains means taking a hit on price.

 

Despite anglo's grand sounding title they are middle men buying in from the refiners so they get the price dictated to them, that doesn't seem to leave a lot of room for discount.

Aye but £90 for 25ltrs then £20 for delivery is a lot

Whilst having Aspen on B&Q shelves would without doubt make it better known and available locally to more people I have my doubts it would work.

 

B&Q are known to be very expensive on all their essential items, people just buy from them for convenience. Sure, they advertise certain products at cheap prices to get people through the door, but all the 'add ons' are not cheap.

 

For instance they have cheap chainsaws, but the 2 stroke oil to go with them is a massive £9.98 per litre ( I sell Rock 2 stroke for £5.00 per litre)

 

I am making margin at £5.00 for this premium product, you can bet there cost price is much, much less than mine, certainly less than £2.00 so they are on around 400% markup.

 

If they wanted the same markup on Aspen ( and considering the extra storage precautions, they are bound to) they would probably want to sell it at over £20 per litre!

 

Added to that, Aspen, even at £3.50 ish per litre, does not sell itself. This is why so many dealers say that it does not sell. In order to get Aspen to move off the shelves the dealer has to 'sell' it to each and every customer in the first instance. This takes time and effort, an effort that pays off quite well as I have proved.

 

B&Q rely on shelf displays to sell, so it will just sit and gather dust.

 

The best way forward for any member of this forum who wants to use Aspen but does not have a local dealer, is for them to ask their dealer to stock it. Make him aware that there is a market for it.

Since last year I ve been using MOTOMIX even though I am a Husqvarna fan.

The reason is because I couldnt find ASPEN were I live.

In my opinion it is much better than gas station gasoline and the difference is noticeable on the job.

When not using this I use 97octane gasoline with the Briggs & Straton additive and husky XP 2stroke oil which I thing is as good as the ones mentioned above.

I can't imagine that the profit (even at B&Q prices) would make it worth their while covering the health and safety aspects of storage and transport. Let alone staff training.

 

Shame, since IMO Aspen probably has the most to offer amateur/infrequent users.

 

A better bet would be Morrisons or equivalent who already sell fuel.

They almost do sell it at £20 for 5ltrs, go on there website. I went on with the intentions of buying but when i saw the price, then broke it down and added it to some jobs its just not worth it
