We were discussing this the other day and someone told me that even if you filter out the red dye they now have ways of detecting it? Not worth the risk IMO.

The dye is nothing, getting the dye out is Childs play, what you can’t get out is the chemical trace but that’s not new, it has always been that way.

Even plod carries a presumptive test kit these days if they get a positive reaction they call HMCE who do a test that will stand up in court.

red diesel isn't just vat free

It's a different level of duty- in fact probably duty free.

You can get your vat back on petrol if vat registered. Obviously claim the net cost against your tax liability. So a litre of petrol becomes about 90pence rather than £1.40

I love filling up:001_tt2:

I had spoken in much detail to HMRC about having the fuel tax on chainsaw fuels reduced to that of Agricultural Diesel and it said would consider but needed a method to trace sales. There are two firms (a third considering producing and testing at present) who make Green chainsaw fuels which could be delivered direct and sold for this use and traced.

HMRC said if enough people wrote then would do this so I am checking the name and address. I had asked years ago all the APF/AA/FCA/FC........... to help but response was very poor and unhelpful comments!!

It would make a huge difference to all cutters/self-employed and the prices we have to earn on sites.

I would like to know how many people are working in Agriculture/Forestry/Horticulture/Arboriculture in the UK and Ireland?

VOSA in conjunction with the police are evil swines. They'll take your vehicle without blinking an eye, leaving many high and dry. VOSA even require that horses need passports if being transported from home to show!

Not sure whether biodiesel is a no-no though. You'd think it would be fine

Nice one Lump. I suspected that was a possibility. If my accountant wasn't on holiday I could have asked her :001_smile:

Even if your not vat registered the tax saving is across the whole £1.40 so if you pay tax at 40% its 84p

Red diesel is taxed at 5%

Be in no doubt that VAT registered or not if you buy a litre of petrol at £1.40 then that is the cost you need to pass on to your customer - a litre of petrol most definitely does not "become 90 pence"

Is there any way to get a discount on petrol if it's used for agricultural machinery?

If you do a VAT registration you will be able to pass the VAT along to the customer, or, if you are the end user, be able to recover it.

You should enter it into your P&L account as a cost so that it is offset against profits and reduces your corporation or income tax liability as appropriate.

Cheers

WOT!!!!!!

You only get your vehicle impounded if there is something gravely wrong with it.

Horse passport’s are mandatory in any case but the first letter in the acronym VOSA stands for VEHICLE, how does that extend to horses? IF they ask you about the nags paperwork tell them to bugger off.

Believe me, they can and continue to confiscate vehicles from the road when, during spot checks, said vehicles are found to be illegally using red diesel.

Plenty of info about it via Google.

I wouldn't underestimate VOSA. They're traffic wardens on wheels and absolute bast***s.
