I had one 2nd hand mountfield which was loved and ancient. I gave it a hammering for 6 years. Finally died this summer so bought a new mid range mountfield. I reckon it'll just about survive this years hammering before it falls apart.

sent from my Defy so apologies for poor spelling and grammar

The info I got from a local garden machinery specialist was that Mountfield on their own were great - rugged with metal bodies etc - but some years ago an Italian company bought them.

Enter the age of plastic... not what they were I'm afraid.

The same guy highly rates Honda.

Until the late 90's Mountfield was a top notch mower, built in Plympton.

The company was then bought by GGP, the largest mower manufacturer in Europe. They own Lawnking, Castell, and Stiga, and more recenty, ATCO

GGP bought the Plympton premises for their UK headquarters. They did not continue production of the Mountfield mowers, but put the name on mowers from their other factories.

The largest volume are cheap, steel decked machines for B&Q. These will not stand up to commercial use for more than a few weeks, so keep clear.

Some of them have aluminium decks and are made by Stiga, these are a safe bet, whilst not being out and out commercial grade, they can easily be classed as heavy domestic.

The Mountfield ride ons are badged machines from the Castell Twincut range, good value domestic quality machines.

If you need professional quality then look towards machines such as John Deere and Stiga

I've had a mountfield for 4 years now, its been a great machine, the only problem i've had is the clutch cable breaking, but at about £25 for a new one it wont hurt !!!!

Mines got a Honda engine, its great, I would defo buy another, but it would have to have an Honda engine.

Ive got a Honda roller, its great, getting on a bit now but its still a good runner, also got a Toro Multcycler.........................Briggs engine, build shite !!!!!!!!!!, also got a Victa 4 stroke thats a right pain in the arse too !!!!!!
