Ime You could take 50 per cent or more without any detriment to the hedge, what it looks like is a different matter.

I've taken 80% in the past and had no problem.

I use the rule that as long as there's a reasonable amount of greenery left it will carry on. So 80% with green bits left would work.

Seen some properly battered ones and they haven't died.

We did one similar to this last winter, never been done before, took around 50 - 60% off using a man cage on the front of the telehandler as it had a grass field next to it for access. Similar to a mewp I guess, but not as manouverable. Wouldn't have wanted to climb it, would have taken for ever! Chipped straight into a dump trailer and a short haul to tip. Took 4 of us 2 and half days, and looks fine and healthy now, 15 months on.

that hedg will look fantastic with a 100 % reduction belive me

I was thinking that too. I could flop em all easily, bit like dominoes. But there would be a proper mountain of chip! They are all on a road so it's a bit tricky to do so!

If the job were mine as I so wish it was.......

Id get inside them and have a look and you can usually judge the best (easiest) point to reduce them to. Deffo climb them as it will be faster and a better looking hedge afterwards. Id say anything up to 50% but thats just me unless your customer is happy for you to reduce them by 1/3rd this year, wait till they have recovered then hit them again with another 1/3rd, more money and a better job in the long term.
