Dog advice

Sounds like you made the best decision for Rudi.

I know it hurts worse than a silky cut but that shows you cared and that he'll be remembered.

My last dog went a similar route, fits getting closer together so that he never really regained his usual self before the next fit. I sat on the floor of vets and blubbed for a good while, so he's a round the house in photo form and his exploits talked about with laughing and smiles. That's him in the avatar.

What worked for me was spending a bit more time with the other dog, good for her as well I think and the family. Hope the pain eases but the memory doesn't fade.

I had to make the decision today after a consultation with the vets, Rudi went into a fit and collapsed while the vets were there, so he made the decision for me.

He was put to sleep, and is now chasing bunnies in a meadow in the sky.

I thought I could take him in the van and bury him myself but I couldn't, so he is going to be privately cremated and we will spread his ashes at his favourite spot up the hills.

HI stephen I'm sorry to hear it about rudi i had to make decision 1 year ago with our dog it very hard to make all the best mate jon

I feel for anyone who has to go through this, having been there a few times and I know it is the right decision, its still not easy. Found this poem some months ago and though very sad I think it sums it up of what we have to do no matter how hard. You will have made the right decision.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak

And pain should keep me from my sleep

Then you must do what must be done

for this battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand

Dont let your grief then stay your hand

For this day, more than all the rest

Your love and friendship stands the test

Weve had those nine years

What is to come holds no fear

Would you want me to suffer so

When the time comes, let me go

Take me where my needs theyll tend

Only stay with me to the end

And hold me firm and speak to me

Until my eyes no longer see

I know in time that you will see

It is kindness that you do to me

Although my tail its last has waived

From pain and suffering Ive been saved

Dont grieve if it should be you

Who must decide this thing to do

Weve been so close we two these years

Dont let your heart hold any tears

--

Sorry for the loss. I makes me sad that one day I will have to make the same decision for my jr. Vinnie

That is a great poem. Feel a bit blubbery now tho.

  • 2 weeks later...

been reading this thread since it started and was thinking yeah, guess this'll be me when my old lab has to be put down, thinking well that'll be a good few years yet hopefully. Little did i know that within the space of a week i'd have to make that decision, only 9yrs old but diagnosed with lymphoma.

10days ago she became older very quick, then soon went down hill, went to a specialist encologist vet who said yes they can treat her for a few grand, and it may give her months but she may be very ill during the chemotherapy and not make a full recovery. So i did the best for her and put her to sleep friday night, and buried her under an oak tree i planted last year looking out across the farm. I have never blubbed like a baby so much!

I'll miss her so much, she was my best friend and has seen me through a sticky patch or two. She'll be greatly missed by us all.

I know how you feel Mr Blair and i can agree it ain;t an easy decision to make. But i know we have both done the best for our dogs!:001_smile:
