Hey MisterTee, I think you are very active in the mountains, so it makes sense to keep your better kit for when it can save your life. I don't get into the mountains much really compared to you, so I wear my £160 soft shell, merino wool base layer and bridgedale socks to work. After all the requirements for both activities are the same. I would encourage everyone to have the best kit (layering system) you can afford (to lose). The Army goretex jackets suggested are great if your in a bramble thicket or in a species that would normally penetrate the goretex layer of more expensive kit. I have a few jackets for different activities. Those wax jackets are good to burn.

Cool, that makes sense Jason. I think personally I am probably too tight to splash out on nice kit for work - but fair play if you do. I bet you're more comfortable than me!

So we've all agreed then, we'd rather be up on the hill in Gucci Goretex than halfway along a huge conifer hedge in the piss-sistant rain!. Unfortunately, I know were I'll be on Monday morning.....

Spent the last 11 or so years sweating my nuts off in the rain up a tree wearing waterproof jackets, ending up being about as wet as I would have been without one on until..............2 years ago. I found a black Nike running jacket in good old TKmaxx for 30 quid. It's either gore or sympatex, tuff as old boots, really easy to move in, tight zip up cuffs, vents under the arm pits, double zipped. Really good piece of kit, very good at regulating your temperature. i think they retail over £100 well worth keeping an eye out for. Will try to get more info but at the moment it's in the footwell of the truck mmmmm smelly!!
