I thing the 300 has the black box too hasnt it, whereas the 200 doesnt?

 

Only the later ones once they have EGR valves I think - my 130 did but the 90 doesn't (130 was an early 97 and the 90 is a late 96)

Do you mean an ECU? If you do then no it doesn't, they are all mechanical, like the 200. Some of the 300tdi autos in discos and Range Rovers are a bit more complicated but I'm pretty certain they haven't got an ECU.

 

Mine definitely had a sealed black box of some sort under the passenger seat with wires coming out - I got told it was an ECU, but not in the same sense as whats on more modern engine. Don't know what it was for though and never bothered investigating :confused1:

I'll wind my neck in then - I'm sure you're right! It is to do with the EGR and that's what's fitted on the 300 autos I was talking about. I didn't realise they had put it on the manual gearbox versions as well so apologies. (In my defence I hadn't read your post before I wrote mine)!
