what is the best conifer tree to plant to make a forest? (I am not very good with breeds of trees!)

not much, I'm more of a chainsaw massacre man!!!

 

 

we had a fir plantation of about 14 acres, planted about 70 years ago and it has just been clear felled and i was going to replant to provide firewood for myself.

If you want good, fast growing, stuff for firewood have you thought about doing coppice? You could have it on rotation so you have a constant supply, it's easier to manage (IMHO) than coniferous stuff and looks a lot nicer

I was told (by good authority) that x Cuprocyparis leylandii could have the higest yield class of any species but the foerestry commision would be unwilling to plant it due to public outcry?....any comments?

Christmas trees are Sitka... Down to were in the country you are , around here they get decimated by spruce aphid so are usually unsalable as x mas trees... Fast growing though

Christmas trees are Sitka.

Not sure where you get your tree from but the traditional tree is normally Norway Spruce not Sitka.

 

Sainsburys are selling Serbian Spruce, but I can't remember seeing any Sitka anywhere.

 

They would be a bit too spiky for my liking! I prefer a Nordmann Fir anyway.
