For any particular purpose?

 

Just for occasional firewood purposes, also i love to see a dense forest with tracks through, its my perfect woodland!!

20 to 30 years before u get a worthwile crop...... ru still going into firewood by then.. u could plant a native woodland with some conifers as a nurse crop..ie thinning the softwoods out first after 20 years. Larch could be nice conifer/firewood tree if u have the right location

what is the best conifer tree to plant to make a forest? (I am not very good with breeds of trees!)

 

best to work out your soil type, PH level and moisture content first then select your trees (tree breeds) which will best grow on that site, i think thats the best starting point.

See as you're local, have you talked to these guys - they're doing some heavily grant aided work around getting woods back into management. They will at least know of some local folk that can come give you advice on your patch, if not help with grants etc.
