Relighting stoves

I usually leave it wherever it was. Sometimes I'll actually open them up so long as there isn't loads of fuel on just to give it a bit of a thrash and help keep the liner clean and dry.

Nice bit of dry softwood, open up the vents for a minute and your away!

 

Now there's a man talking sense. It doesn't even need to be a small bit with softwood - if it's dry it'll go.

Do people shut the vent up completely overnight or leave open slightly?

I have a vent in the door and a vent under where the ash pan is. I leave the lower one open slightly. Can I get away with closing it down completely?

 

I do close all vents and the damper too, but only once the stove temperature is sufficient that it will sustain itself. If you close it down too early, it will just smoulder. I don't know how I managed before without a flue thermometer!

I have an Aga Little Wenlock classic.

 

Get a really good bed of hot ashes, fill it full of wood, let it get going really well then close it all down tight.

 

I am up again by 5.30 to 6 in the morning and can normally just rake the top of the ashes over, throw on some small stuff or a bit of soft wood, open up the top vent and away it goes. Burn it hard for the first half hour or so while I walk the dog clears any blackening of the glass though this is normally only minimal.

 

If I put any largish bits of oak on last thing at night I find they dont break down completely on their own by the morning and a bit of a knock about with the poker gives me some good lumps that just start to flame up on their own.

If I have embers in mine I just put more logs on and open up he air..... thats all it needs.

 

And if the stove is out, I just take some embers of the rayburn and chuck them in it, put some logs on and it works every time.
