A friend who I thought would be at the front of the marching didn't go on strike. When I asked her why not her answer opened up quite a different dimension to my thinking...

She didn't go on strike because as an Auxy worker in a hospital she is about as low paid as you can get in the NHS so her thinking was that +10% to her pension or - 10% to her pension actually made bugger all difference... what she was in fact being asked to strike for was for the pensions of all the management layers at the top of the tree. And that didn't sit to well with her.

And in fact the pensions of the very lowest paid will not be affected by the changes.

I think there's other issues regarding pensions that people should be kicking up a stink about. For example for the past 15 years I've been contracting out of the state pension. All my contributions go to a private pension but as of next year the government are putting a stop to this....all money will now go to the government instead....basically they need our pension money now. As I said before there's going to be nothing for my generation

I don't think so :confused1:

You can still have a private pension, in fact all employers will soon have to offer all there employees a pension.

Do you mean they are reducing tax relief???

I mean the portion of my ni contribution that went into the government pension I contracted out of so this payment went into a private or pension instead. This is what they are putting a stop to

If your self-employed you can chose whether you pay class2 contributions (for the pension) or not.

I only pay the class1, which is about £2 a week I think.

I pay into a private pension and the government pay in, in the form of tax relief, I'm not aware that any of this is changing.

thats the problem with NI contributions, the government would have us believe that they all go into a pot somewhere to earn interest for our retirement.... however in reality they are just another income tax, all the money goes straight out in government spending.

If the system really worked as people imagined then we would all have accrued a healthy government pension pot by the time we retire. In fact the state will have already spent all that money and our state pension (if there is one) will be paid for by the taxpayers of the day....our children.

Thats why I don't pay class2 Tom, there is talk of a new single payment to all past retirement age, that will replace means tested benefits such as income support.

You will get this regardless of savings and other income.

Class1 is a legal requirement.
