I know what u mean arborholic, have just been using a pantin so far as this is all i have but have been impressed how this performs, supose im just curious to try it with a footloop for long ascents as i imagine you then eliminate the sit back on yer hitch, but like you say its all more gear hung on yer harness.

thanks for the other input aswell guys.

I occasionally use a tape sling as a foot loop, that way it can double as a redirect, two birds, one stone. I've got 3" of inner tube with the sling through it to choke it to my foot.

the kong is a super tiny ascender that is really comfortable for adscending with. it puts you in natural position unlike the petzl which i find i "hang" off when holding it. The kong does however thrash your knuckles when going past branches....

I think it was me that said the handled ascender probably isn't nessecary. I have not used a non handled type so I can't be sure but I am now using the ascender less than I did at first.

I now use my Pantin completely and my left hand goes on the rope above the RW, purely for balance, my right hand advances the hitch.

On longer ascents I put the handled ascender on with a tape sling as a foot loop.

Although I now use the handled ascender very little it's really useful to have for the occasional RADS, the handle is nice when I use it, and I wouldn't be without an ascender.

I just don't know if it needs to be a handled one.

Wow! Just read this whole thread, yes the whole thread! Ok, in 4 sittings throughout the day but still...

It's great to see the discussion unfold and a few people turnaround their beliefs from:

"No way, can't see it, DRT for life for me"

to

"Hmmm, i might give this a try"

to

"Just ordered one, cant wait for it to turn up"

to

"Tried it out today, dunno...dont think i like it...

to

"OK, i've figured out a different way of planning my climb"

and

"Now i'm getting work done faster with less energy"

to

"I'm never going back to D(inosaur)RT"

Very cool!

Does anyone have a plan or dimensions for crafting a wooden rope wrench?

People have made them out of hickory hammer handles, so I guess about the size of one of them. Hole drilled through at an angle and filed nicely to accept the rope, and holes on t'other end so you can attach the tether.
