Rope Wrench feedback

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of adding my Wichard Large Bail Snap Shackle to the mix, not sure if I could be bothered with splicing a 6mm cord Craig! :)

Haha 6mm easy! and looks good :001_tt2: Yeah the snap lock shackle comes in handy!

heres a pic of my setup, thanks to Drew for the idea for the tether!

So you can see in the picture that with my weight on the LJ it's being twisted.

The RW isn't set so all my weight is on the LJ.

I realise that descending a bit will set the RW but that's not always desirable.

I've just done the same exercise with a SJ and it sat straight on the rope, no twisting.

Do you think this is ok?

(my finger is there just to hold it in place for the photo)

Oldmill, set my SJ up today with the RW and found that not only was the rope twisted as it ran through the SJ but the whole braking mechansim looked cak handed, so to speak. I didn't like the way the rope pulled the SJ around and had the tether one side and the rope the other. Made operating the brake a bit of PITA to be honest. Reckon it's much easier just with the hitch climber set up. Not sure how it runs with the LJ but I wasn't keen to go for a fly with the SJ/RW set up as I have it currently.

Oh yeah, forgot; if you didn't keep an eye on it the SJ started to slide around the krab due to the way the rope and tether were pulling on it. This led to the krab being side loaded. Not pretty.

Yep and I think the same can happen with the LJ and probably the Unicender. Those little plastic karab clips or a piece of cycle inner tube will solve this.

I'm waiting to see what people think of my photo above, bearing in mind the LJ is loaded not the RW.

I wonder if everyone's LJ is like that and they just haven't noticed. I can't see how it could be any different given the fact that the crab attachment point is offset to the side and not in line with the rope.

Every LJ has to be the same, people just have not noticed.

A shorter tether wouldn't make any difference as the twisting shown in my photo is BEFORE the RW is taking any strain at all.

Another way of looking at it is to take the RW off and sit back on the LJ on a single line.

I know those oval karabiners are great but just wondering if an HMS with some rubber bands on would keep the LJ mounted nearer to the gate (slight off centre) so that the LJ sits straighter?

That might straighten it, but its not really a solution because oval krabs are so popular now that most people would be using them, and centering the load is a good idea.

I guess the real question is, does that twisting matter?

Good post Rupe. The rubber bands or plastic clip things will do the job.

Your last question, 'does the twisting matter?' is what I've banging on about.

The LJ is designed for DRT. I think the twisting matters. I'm just about to crown lift a Sycamore on RW and LJ so I'll see how it goes but may go to the HC set up.
