Measuring tree heights

I have a laser measure which I stand by the trunk, point it into the canopy to a thickish stem take the measuremnet and estimate the bit above the sten I measured to.

 

Sometimes on a still day I can hit a leaf at the very top and measure to a foot or two.

 

Used this method to fell three big trees into a very small garden with great success, customer was well impressed to see the trees "just" fit.

Most of the clinometers give you a percentage reading so you just measure from you to the tree and then take the indicated percentage of that measurement.

If you use a metal tape measure instead of a stick you can make different angles other then the 45 degrees. You can make a table to work out the height from different distances.

We use a helium balloon on a piece of string. Fly it up till its level with the top then read of the measurements from the tags tied on the string.

Sorry we don't really but I reckon it would be fun.
