actualy that hornbeam looks more acer now i lokk possibly trident, the owner is a keen collector, possibly a shaded out arbutus at the end of hedge too

The original planter was 3 owners ago, I have some photos somewhere of the trees when they were all around 3ft high......many many moons ago (well 22 years at least)

When the trees were topped, they took around 6 to 8 foot off them.

Bit hard from those pictures but could be a Chamaecyparis lawsoniana variety/cultivar (Lawsons cypress)

I'd say without more information that's about a far as you could bet on this one. Its a gold cultivar looks too broad for either suggestions although it does look like its been topped out before. My guess would be C lawsoniana "Golden Wonder"

last year my neighbour took the top off a couple of conifer/fir trees in his garden, can anyone ID from the picture please? the branches are soft with tiny cones and the most amazing smell from the wood. He has offered the rest of the tree for us to cut down and burn in the woodburner. I know it wont be any good to burn till next year, hopefully though it will be suitable.

It could be C. lawsonia 'Lanei' or maybe 'Winston churchill', but could be Leylandii Castlewellan??

Any timber over 3", will be fine to burn on a stove next winter.
