last year my neighbour took the top off a couple of conifer/fir trees in his garden, can anyone ID from the picture please? the branches are soft with tiny cones and the most amazing smell from the wood. He has offered the rest of the tree for us to cut down and burn in the woodburner. I know it wont be any good to burn till next year, hopefully though it will be suitable.

Going off the smell, if its a strong sourish smell (not unpleasant though) it'll be the Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, if its very sweet smell it'll be Chamaecyparis obtusa - Hinoki Cypress and possible 'Crippsii'

And never rule out the old Leylandii Variety:lol:

Thank you for such a quick response.

The smell, is quite heady and amazing, it reminds me of an aromatherapy oil, it is very very pleasant.

I will try and get home early enough tomorrow to take a close up picture of the branches and bark.
