Can anyone please tell me when you should stop cutting conifer hedges for the winter?? I usually cut them till we get hard frosts but just wondered what the score is?

I'm still cutting them now , but admit I'm starting to get nervous as some folk on here advocate spring /summer only ( and I have no reason to doubt them) .

Is there an absolute deadline ?

Good question hodge.

I don't think that there is a deadline as such . Just don't cut them back to harshly . I also advocate Mick Stockbridges thinking of cutting them later in the year as this will reduce aphid damage in summer .

No I don't think that at all mate. I said late October for this year in particular as we've had a warm Autumn and even then that's the very latest I'd do em. I always tell my customers to have em done in April or May that way they look nice for the Summer then hold onto the foliage for protection for the Winter.

I won't do reductions between March and August purely because of greenfinch nests. Trimming of well-clipped hedges I will.

IME hedges can burn/dessicate in the winter during times of dry cold.
