Hi,

Im currently cutting and spliting logs to sell as my main business (property maintenance & carpentry) is a little slow at the mo. Was just wondering what the most popular length of log is? I dont want to cut them too long and put my potential customers off as they might not fit in their woodburner/fire!

Regards,

Anthony.

8 inches is generally foolproof for length, if your on a smallish scale as you get to know customer requirements and can cut longer according to their needs. Saving you processing time. If you get away with 12 inch for example you save 50% time cutting in theory as opposed to 8 inch.

All depends where you are and who you're marketing to. Most people round Warwickshire do 8 - 10", but I know some people in the cotswolds who do 12 -14" for the bigger inglenook fireplaces that they are marketing their logs towards.

I sell stoves and do firewood as a side line.

Cutting at 240mm or thereabouts will fit all stoves that I am aware of. CW cut at 250mm. That will fit all stoves up to 5kw, that covers about 80% of the market.

Slowly kill you ;-) have you seen the splitter made from a big bit of trunk with a tyre screwed to it? works a treat...

Anyway 8inch is the way forward, it will service everyone.
