Gonna bring this topic back up but has anybody used the large and small splitting axe from grandfors. I used the small one this week and really liked how light and easy it was but sometimes found it just lacked a bit of weight to go through tougher bits and had to pick up my cheap maul. Was thinking the larger axe might be a bit better suited to some of the crap I split

I have the large. I haven't tried the small to compare it with, but it does have reasonable weight and goes through quite a lot. I picked it up cheaply on Ebay and certainly don't regret buying it, but I think if I was paying full price I would go for the maul as the large splitting axe doesn't go through really knotty stuff and unions that well.

I have the large splitting axe, its a great piece of kit, very well made and lovely to use. After I bought it I picked up a maul for a tenner and I've used it to split almost all my firewood this year (about 12 cube for my own use). The Granfors has sat indoors looking pretty, its too nice to leave in the shed

The only thing that puts me off the fiskars is the fibreglass shaft. Am I right thinking hickory shafts give less vibration

on cold days both hurt your hands when you miss.....

Don't miss!!!! it's not hard lol

never had bad vibes on good strikes, only misses

Well my mate who let me try his small gransfors has since bought a large as well and let me try that so I thought I'd give people my opinion on them both.

The Large was nice to use and dealt with most things. Easier than swinging the maul and never felt the need to get the maul out the shed. But when splitting nice straight stuff the small really is a pleasure, and you can work fast with it and easily one handed if necassary.

Still a hard choice to make for me unless i have around £180 woth of axe in the shed and alternate depending on the wood. Not sure the wife would be impressed with that!
