I had the same thing on an MS170 bit of rubber the the gauze well, cleaned it out and went on cutting two weeks later the fuel pipe tore a hole and dissentegrated just above the tank grommet.

just something you might want to look at or get the parts ordered when you can rather than finding out whilst out on the job like i did

just picked up an 038av off a neighbour today, had a few 038's and think they're great, this might be the best one yet except for fuel coming out the tank vent when on its side. The old vent tube was knackered so i'll fit some new pipe when replacing the main fuel line, but can't remember if anything goes on the other end of the pipe after it feeds through the hole in the body? any ideas?

Normally it is a piece of clear pipe with one of those Stihl breather screws inserted around an inch from each end of the pipe.

Fitted a new fuel pipe from tesgol to my 036 today. It's tight, the old one was perished and leaking at the carb and where it goes into the tank.

all sorted, managed to get the grub screws out of the old pipe and fitted them to some new pipe, problem solved. Much appreciated.

Got a 285cd on the bench today. What a POS.

carb was full of muck so and fuel line was split. Replaced and did new carb kit whilst at it.

Still won't run right. Think tank breathe is goosed as tank seems to pressurize itself and fire fuel out the fuel line. Also seems to have a mind of its own and just runs on like a lunatic. Sometimes it's floods and won't start for 30 mins.

Driving me mad, as per usual.

036 was doing my head in as it was running out of fuel but still had half a tank left because of the perished pipe. It would fire and start then stop again as if it was flooding as well. It seems alright now. Good luck with your problems.

Most fuel tanks will form a pressure and is caused by the fuel getting warm or screwing the fuel cap in. Tank breathing can be tested using the pressure/vacuum tester. The rest of it may be an air leak, worn carb (have you checked the throttle shaft tightness in the carb body?), or just old rubber carb parts.

 

Always thought the 285CD was a gutsy saw!
