My 044 is on the bench still wont run with a new carb kit ! spark isnt the best gapped the flywheel maybe shes just to old now ! Been in family since 1992 i think and was secound hand then !

 

hmmmmmm

 

Compression tested, vac tested, pressure tested???

Im unsure on one thing tho on the 051 should the chain be free to move when the engine is off, as when i was going to sharpen the chain its wont move at all it runs freely when the engine is running and throttle applied but not when shut off which i thought it would do as it doesnt have a brake or is it a feature of the clutch

 

Yes it should turn freely. You could have it slightly too tight, or you could have a bar problem. Is it a sprocket-nosed bar or a Duromatic? If it's a Duromatic they can get slightly worn at the tip, causing a burr which just stops the chain from being pulled round by hand. You can get the same problem along the bar - if you are slightly pulling the chain at a slightly different angle to plain along the bar. The chainsaw has a lot more power, so it pulls it over - obviously wasting a lot of energy and getting hot into the bargain.

 

The easiest thing I've found is to take the bar off, check the clutch is spinning freely (could be slightly sticking or weak springs) and then run the chain around the bar by gripping one drive link, pushing it well in to the groove and sliding it right round. Any stiff spots and there's your problem.

hmmm nope i would only have the kit to compresion test it and i got grumpy after i couldnt get it to seal properly before trying to test it ! will fire if you give it a sniff of ultra 2040 (wd40 from wurth ) but the spark is weak at lower starting spead to get a good one you have to wang her over hard !

 

need to buy some more tools im guessing ! lol !

 

Or box it up and send it to you lol !

The chain should be free to revolve around the bar freely by hand, sounds like the sprocket and clutch have bound together or the chain is bound in the bar - some bio oil can do this if left for a season - it goes like rubber!

Thats brilliant thankyou it has a old oregon 25" bar and chain which came with it when i was talking to the guy i bought it off he said it hadnt been replaced in his ownership so im geussing its pretty old.

Im geussing its a duromatic bar i have also posted another thread asking if any one can reccomend a new bar and chain for it.

Ill strip it down tomorrow and see if i can turn the sprocket by hand with the bar off

Just been looking through a few of my old diary s and jobs I done with my old man in the garage. And it has only just hit me how tweaking a saw is very much the same as a four stroke old car engine.

 

My first engine was a mini engine. We polished the ports and skimmed the head down. Also put a racing cam to keep valves open longer.

 

Ring any bells????

 

Shows how my mind works if I have only just remembered this stuff.

 

But then I have been trying to block anything I did with my old man out of my head lately.

Yup, thats the one - see if the chain is sticking in the rails through rust/gloop etc and see what the nose sprocket on he bar is like as well - usually just a case of breaking the diagnosis in to bite size elements and analysing the results.

 

Your check on the sprocket will either rule out or confirm sprocket/clutch issues.

Thinking out loud here a bit...... If I'm short of torque at the top end, what's the cause, or fix..?

It's had new crank seals, piston ring, carb diaphragms & gaskets, new carb mounting gaskets, tank breather, plug & air filter.

Things not replaced: Fuel line & fuel pick up.

Starts perfectly. Idles well. Accelerates nicely. Dies off after a couple of seconds at WOT, so fuel starvation. I haven't had a chance in daylight to have a good go at tuning it, it's more or less on stock settings. I'll replace the fuel hose on the off chance that it's collapsing, and the pick up on the off chance that it's restricted.

Any other thoughts....?
