yve, the Ochsenkopf - is that what stihl paints their logo on? sure we got one looks like that, think it had spaltfix and Ochsenkopf both scribed on the head. good ax for easy rounds, though. we got the lighter one. s'good.

I'm really not sure if they brand them for Stihl. Could be a possibility.

not sure what to go for now! anyone know of a second hand one for sale to try out!!!!

Get up to my yard in cheshire, I'll get 5 or 6 axes and you can try them all on my 20T pile of rings (minimum of 2 hours on each axe and that should give you a good idea which to use), meanwhile I'll stick to the hydraulic version!

what size rings you got to bust there in dorset? if you only gonna have one with ya, better get a maul. like 2.5- 3 kg. you can do all with a maul. and round here, tractor dealers with a goodies shop sell them for about 23 quid. wooden handle, i'd say a big maul is all you need. smaller axes are fine if you got spare cash, grunsfors fine if you got even more spare cash, but a standard splitting maul will handle it all. :001_cool:

I've not found them to be that great. I have a steel wedge that has a twist to it and found that to be fairly good on pretty much anything - billeting or gnarly rings.

yes. a standard steel wedge seems worth the time on a nice billet. but it didn't seem economical (!) to keep bashing at a hard ring. rip it in half lengthways with the saw if it didn't give in after 4 shots. you just know some of them will take ages whaling away with maul, wedge or big mallet. saw in half, save your body for next year! wise words if i listened to 'em...:001_rolleyes:
