Monkey puzzled

I've watched this tree die within a month. Was tempted to go and knock on but then I got phoned up about it. I suspect honey fungus could be to blame but there were no FBs around the tree. There is sap oozing out all over.

 

Any ideas?

I think Rob Arb's suggestion is correct , this is not leakage because of an infection with (rhizomorphs of) a necrotrophic parasitic Armillaria species, but oozing of sap or resin from frost cracks in the bark and living tissues of this Araucaria.

I'm no Arb but thought the monkey puzzle came from cold mountainous regions? Doesn't that make frost damage much less likely?

I believe regardless which region of the world a tree may be from stress will take it's toll on any tree over time, and it looks like no monkees up in that tree ever again.

I suppose it could be as simple as that. A hard winter and then the long dry period has done a lot of trees over round here.

 

I'm not looking forward to dealing with it though!

i could be wrong but i think the monkey puzzle is a native tree of england as you can get whitby jet from the beach which is fossilised monkey . how much is the stem worth if sold for turning ?

Took one down the other week... had a bit of a sleep less night before hand but actually it was okay, the manual polish clearing device worked well and we could chip it, as it wasn't stringy!!
