3 Peaks challenge

Did the national 3 peaks about 8 years ago, a group of us managed it in about 23 hours from opening the minibus door at the bottom of Snowdon to being back in the van at the bottom of Nevis.

We used the tourist routes up Snowdon and Nevis and climbed over Scarfell and down the other side so the bus could go around to save us a bit of time.

Good fun but hard work. The worst bit I think was when we were about an hour from the top of Nevis (the last one) and we were passed by some old boy who looked like he was going to be late to collect his pension.

Good luck with it if you do go.

Did the 3 peaks challenge about 10 years ago. As STS says, good fun but hard work, Scafell was the worst from what I remember. Not much to look at and pretty hard going. We went from Bristol, and I think it took around 20 - 24 hours total, from Snowdon to Ben Nevis. We did it with a load of people from the Army, Royal Artillary I think, who were great fun and definatley kept everyone going. I would reccomend getting in as much walking practice as possible, hilly or not, and best if you go with someone so you can push each other on. Good luck, and the most important thing is to remeber to enjoy it!

As a qualified ML I would discourage people from doing the 3 peaks who have no prior mountain experience. Get someone on the team who knows their stuff as these events go wrong with alarming regularity.

Try and spread it over 2 days as the locals at Wasdale head have just about have enough of late night arrivals of minibus fulls of noisey 3 peakers.

I'm not trying to put a downer on your noble idea but it is still possible to raise money and spread the event to minimize local disruption.

How about doing the welsh 3000'ers equally as tough but all walking and no driving. You will need backup though.

Have a look at http://www.wasdaleweb.co.uk for info on the 3 peaks challenge effects on Wasdale Head.

Regards Matt.

I've done it and therefore may sound like a bit of a hypocrite here. It isn't really a challenge, I did it when I wasn't exactly fit but it did knacker me. When I drove for it on the over hand, well thats a challenge!!

Think about what your doing a stupid amount of driving, along with massive erosion to commonly used tracks that require no skill to navigate - yet people still get lost.

If you do decide to do it then good luck, but please be considerate and be aware of the negative impacts. See ukclimbing.com and do a search.

Well said Rob and remember there is usually snow on the Ben right through to early June up on the summit.

i have never done this, but have done a number of similar challenges over the years. I would suggest waiting until june anyway for the longer daylight hours, but its all old hat now, so many people have done this, upsetting locals in the process. Avoid the big organised events for less impact, or as someone else said, welsh 3000s are an option, or sort your own route and be different! could also use the better environmental impact of your own route as a publicity tool for fundraising.
