if a single butt roadside felled, normally get anything from 50 to 100 quid for an 8 foot 30 inch though did get 200 last year for something a bit bigger. most won't touch road fieldside trees metal etc is always the excuse. plank it yourself turn it regularly and sell next year!

I spent a day with a professional timber grader a few months back, and the going rate for the very best quality butts was around £8 a hoppus foot. The price reduced from there on down through lower grade furniture grade, good beam, rough beam and then fencing.

Those ar the sort of prices i would suggest Big J. Cornish oak never reaches the dizzying heights of £8 though lol!

Its measurement is the mid quarter girth (in inches) squared, times the length of the log (in feet), divided by 144.

So you measure the girth of the log at the centre point, in inches, divide that figure by four, square that figure, multiply it by the length of the log (in feet) and divide that figure by 144. That gives you the number of hoppus feet in the log.

The trees that we were looking at were on occasion quite exceptional - perfectly straight and without defect. That said, it was only about 2 or 3 out of about 25 trees that had any lengths of that value.

As an aside, in the round value seems to go way north of £8 - I was desperate for cherry the other day, contacted A and J Scotts in Wooler (big roundwood dealer) and they wanted bloody £15 a hoppus delivered!
