initial thought was willow (see my first post) and now others have confirmed my suspicions:thumbup:

Id go with river burch, the flat plates on the bark have light coloured lenticels on them and are smooth, similar to birch characteristics. Doesnt look like willow, for its size the fissures seem too deep.

Only kidding, I also had a second thought for river birch but its maybe just too browny orange bark.

 

Ive seen some pretty grooved goat willow before now!

my first thought was willow but it could be birch like rob says or even poplar. Its almost impossible to be sure with a chunk like that, there is a lot of possibilities.
