The branch initially landed in a field but then the farmer lifted it over his hedge and dumped it next to the cycle path. It's not from someone's forest.

If it was felled and left there I wouldn't have touched it. Thanks for all the replies.

but everyone scavenges

I mean surely everyone here has taken stuff from a skip or maybe dead wood from a copse etc- mostly no harm done- seems to make sense to me

It's the gits who nick stuff obviously piled up for sale that give scavenging a bad name. When I was younger we had a small 'orchard' about 20 trees- there really was too much fruit for us and we were more than happy for scrumping to take place. Perhaps though asking the owner is the best way forward on this.
