oops she got it wrong, we now have cleared it up, yes i now know en, or enbuske, we have to protect them when we are doing rail clearance in småland, i like the fact there is in fact a swedish form, Juniperus communis suecica which i have seen quite a lot very distinctive form.

I predict this will next come up in february 2012. At that time, those that don't, won't or can't use botanical nomeclature will still maintain their view and those that do, will and can will maintain theirs. Some of that second group will yawn at its re-appearance and marvel the apparent fact that it is considered to be an important issue.

The first group must accept that just because they have no use for a system it doesn't follow that the system has no function. My ability with differential equations is markedy limited - am I right to demand their eradication?

Those that use the system all the time are obviously presuming that those that don't, never do.

I use it when needed antione, when I'm ordering trees from Ashridge or dealing with an application.

Ninety percent of us are lowly tree cutters with work that takes us to the edge of our towns and villages, we are not international arborists travelling the world

People using Latin unneccessarily remind me of the majority of people on the wine isle at morrisons, they are clambering for a higher status than their natural ability will allow

So if you use the following names you'll fall into the bracket above...

Leylandii, Magnolia, Rhododendron, Viburnum, Philadelphus, Camellia, Fuchsia, Hypericum, Hydrangea, Eucryphia, Escallonia, Hebes, Buddleia, Potentilla, Clematis, Wisteria, Berberis, Spirea, Pieris, Forsythia.......and so on

most tree surgeons in the uk will know and have worked on all these shrubs/trees/climbers and will use their Latin name to describe them with the client.

I think you have the essence of it there. Unneccessarily. I'd suggest the same goes for any jargon (in the original sense of the word) used outside its neccessary group.

The OP seemed to want its abandonment altogether...

Most "commoners" (even you Tim) are or have become familiar with Genus

A huge portion of the English language is derived from Latin

A customer wants his Oak tree Pruning, he doesn't want to know Genus, species and sub species. The customer lives in england and speaks english, he doesn't speak Latin

Hmm well ...I had some quite good half-price wine from Morrison's only last month...(well; to my uneducated pallet that is). I wouldn't like to think that I don't know my 'place' though.

Some people have it, some don't.

The wine drinking culture is a typical example of people acting like sheep :001_smile:
