Mature beech limb splits

Noticed these splits last week and got consent to remove the limb.

I thought they were recent splits till I got up there.

As you can see some of the splits were all the way through but amazed the limb was still up there.

We had to rig off the limb and was very concious of the splits but never seen splits like these still up a tree.

Has anyone else or any idea of the cause?

interesting Bob , the only splits i have seen on scaffolds like this have either been when they are on the ground or still hung up never seen anythng like this thats still in situ before

Seen it a few times Bob.....but I have worked on a lot of beech trees, more so than any other tree i'd say

can't tell 100% from the photo but look like hazard beam cracks with slight torsional twist

bat survey would have returned a zero rating, crack not open to the air, nor large enough.

tis a hazard beem, no torsion just bog standard dog legged stress:thumbup1:

 

you get these in nearly all mature trees, some you see some you dont, often stabalise and heal over/occlude.

HAd a large oak limb like it that we removed in March. Had obviously been like it a while......TO had missed it from the ground.

its not at all uncommon in oaks
