a) it would have trashed everything else around it and

b) we wanted as much weight off as possible so the hinge didnt break off.

 

The hinge was set at a 90 degree angle to the direction the poplar was trying to push the beech, and yes a very thick hinge was left and we then pulled it over with a steel cable on a large John Deer. Quite hard to really see why we did everything we did, but with the tools available we felt we tackled it the best way we could.
