Personally I think its fine to change the price before you begin work and they have option to say no, customers can cancel at any time prior to the job starting, so we too can make changes (not that I ever have)

 

But I would never ask too change the price after the job was started, unless they offered.

After my previous ramblings, I think Skyhuck is right, if they are friends and it was just a friendly verbal quote then just tell them its going to be more.

 

(begs the question, how is the tree down and the client injured?? Is there a link?? )

I did the same on a fencing job, spoke to the wrong person at the saw mill to price the materials and they short quoted it. I took the hit, it still paid a wage just no profit on top. The customer was aware of the mistake and the fact it was the sawmills fault and offered to pay the deficit. It was my fault for not double checking the order/speaking to the boss so I told the customer I would absorb it.

 

He has since passed on my details and got me a couple of jobs worth more than the loss in profits so I am happy.

 

Provided it isn't costing you money to do the work, suck it up, live and learn and add a few quid on the next couple of jobs to cover the loss.

I've only had one job were I have told the client I buggered up on the quote and changed the price, that was BEFORE starting the job, which then went to someone else.

 

The other odd occassion I have cocked the price up the work had already begun so there was no way I was going to ask for more money.
