Spot on Nailer.

One other thing I've noticed since I took on my own work, is that people do not try to make out that you said you'd do those extras "while you are here". Countless times this happened when I was working for others, one company policy was to stick to the paperwork, anothers was extremely random and varied, so as a worker you never really knew where you stood, and of course the bosses phone was never working if you needed to ask a question. I cant think how much time could have been lost doing these extras, but then if its a good client, is it good to refuse to do them? This is one issue I could never pin down and get sorted with the boss, and was a source of aggravation, as we were often put on the spot.

Surley we have to be both? My lack of buissness knowledge and experiance have presented with me with my greatest challenge. It is only through my learning of these skills, and guidance ( thanks- you know who you are) that my small biz now stands a chance of achieving, rather than limping through.

Each skill, without the other puts you at a distinct disadvantage.

I dont believe you need to be a "businessman" to run a successful company, my accountant does it all. All I have to do is be fair with my prices and do a good job. Start with basic kit and build up as you go along. You dont need an 880 to top a row of conifers. haha

Speak regularly with your acoountant and he will tell you what you can and cant spend on shiny kit. anyway its not shiny for long unless you polish it and that really is sad. IMO.

The way I see it no one would pay me to climb a tree when I'm 60 so I either have to:-

get another job before then,

hope that I could become a forman/gang leader and do nothing

or run my own company and hopefully have enough work to employ other's to do it for me while I sit back and rack it in (Oh yeah!)

So i picked the latter.
