Im currently using a ford transit 3.5t as a chip truck, its great in the dry but useless offroad or in snowy conditions. just wondered if anyone that has used both would be able to give advice if a Landy 130 tipper would be better? how do the payloads compare? i know the landy would be a lot more expensive but would save me having another 4x4 to pull the chipper around in bad weather. any help much appreciated!

130 can carry a lot more weight, Transit can carry a lot more volume.

130 is great off road, Transit is awful of road.

130 is generally high maintenance, Transit is pretty easy to keep sweet.

You need to look at what the bulk of your work is before you make a decision.

New Transits seem better on DERV than 130s, which is becoming a serious consideration.

130s resale will always be better though.

Glad I could help....:001_tt2:

having used both i would honestly say that it depends on the application - a landy is great off road but there aint too much room in the cab ! on the other hand a transit is great for roadside work , will carry three men and all your grub bags . i would honestly say that it is totally dependant on your need for 4x4

If yu're looking at a 130, seriously consider a H/D 110 tipper instead. You'll never get a 130 full before it's over weight and the H/D 110 will carry more as it weighs less and carries almost a full half tonne more than a standard 110.

Despite what some will try and tell you, it's not just a case of fitting helper springs to a standard 110 to get you up to 3.5t :sneaky2:

well my self i have a transit tipper and my opinion is there great, guy i work with regular has a landy 130tipper and i really cant see why he loves it, it weighs 3ton empty and that is terible offroad sinks upto the axles on flat lawns etc. landys are good until you cut them up and stick a tipper on the back.

I have just last week sold a Yr 2000 130 TD5 defender and bought a 2004 transit tipper

The 130 has averaged 18.5mpg over the last 12 months but will go anywhere. It pulled like nothing else but when very full rolls around a lot as the weight is high up and there is a lot of travel in the suspension. It was an excellent truck and I will miss it but 90+% of my work is road side domestic and yard is hard standing so I don't need the 4x4. It also was worth quite a bit and I wanted to release some capital. I also don't like working in the snow so don't need a chip truck that will go out in the snow.

The transit has a much more spacious cab, can carry 3 people without it being intimate and seems to carry weight better. It also has a much smaller turning circle.

As a day to day tree truck I think the transit will be better, my land rover went to another arbtalk member who also runs a 6.5 tonne tipper and wanted a second truck for building site jobs etc. For this it will be ideal.

I will be getting another landrover for a personal car

Mine was about 2300kg empty and one 10" wide tyres so didn't sink in anything.

The problem with a 110 tipper is it carrys all the load over the back axle, the 130 single cab has 70% of the load between the axles.

Yes you will be over loaded when full on a 130 but the same can be said for just about all 3.5 tonne trucks
