Guesstimation for a Big Dougie?

I have an aquaintance that has had a quote for an 120ft Douglas fir to be removed near Ross on Wye.

 

The qoute is for two men two days - dismantle, fell and clear. £380 per day.

 

He was a tad reluctant on the price, I have now put him staight.

 

What he enquired of me was, is there any value in the timber ?

 

He is fairly sure on the height but has no idea of the dbh.

I have absolutely no experience of this type of enquiry, so can any of you big timber fellas give me any imput I can pass back.

3 to 6 cubic metres at a guess, and it needs to be where a mobile sawmill can operate to be useful. Try Pontrilas sawmill if its near a road.

Yeah...you need a truck load...bits and pieces...a real PITA from experience...mobile sawmill the best way to go ...

Sounds strange that he can tell that the top of it is 120ft away from him,but can't tell the width from arms lenght?

 

Be keen to see the pictures if he takes some.

As above..they won't send a lorry for a part load..20 cu.m or so. has it grown as a single tree in the open? If so, that will reduce the quality of the timber, I'd have thought. I'd say value = negligible.

price seems tight.......sometimes what we do with 2/3 decent logs is to load them on to big trailer 12ft and drive them to mill.....a local farmer may help u load on....3.7m logs r a good size

If its been growing on its own the side branches will have grown large meaning knotty timber, ok for carving or garden sleepers but noy much use for anything else. With commercial plantations only the trees in the centre go for milling, all the knotty stuff from the edge is used for low grade jobs.

you'll get 10 bob a cube for it off the local sawmill if your lucky,2 men for 2 days will work hard if its that big
