Brushcutter ticket

waste of money IMO my lad is doing an ND at the moment and he's done the brush cutter ticket, but they don't get a hedge cutter ticket:confused1:

I did the ticket for blowing your nose.

 

Joking aside, strimmers forget it, bladed brushcutters and clearing saws (I did clearing saw years ago - didn't know the nptc was back for it?) maybe.

 

But, doesn't the user manual give basic use and safe operation instructions?

 

£120 makes me think it's glorified paper as above; I'd have thought max £50 would be enough to do an hour or twos instruction.

We get some instruction on basic maintenance and use anyway - that's included in the course. The £120 is just for the assessment and ticket.

If it's something that makes you more employable then it could be worthwhile, it also shows that your competent at using it. I've found that on many job applications for woodland management roles it specifies brushcutter/strimming ticket as essential

 

Unfortunately IME tickets are a very poor indicator of competence.

To be frank

This insistance for tickets in gardening/tree work is admirable as operatives are then feeling like someone cares for their safety and they always learn at least something- we all do however experienced we are- even if it is just the benefit of newer less polluting gear.

BUT

The COST

Has got to be controlled- already you lose a days work and there is a cost to your firm for that- then travelling- then the course - then the assessment

It's got to a point where the only profitable business is in running courses.

Someone somewhere has got to get a grip on this.

I remember spending 3 days doing cs30/31 and we had to learn such a load of cr*p that had no relevance to safety- To an experienced hand the course is doable in one day if it is condensed down to practical ability without all the naming of chain linkages etc that have been brought in to pad out the course.

Pesticide course- 3 days much of the time spent going through EU legislation and just general chat. Cost £400 plus 3 days lost work. This could be done in one day. Then you see the local council spraying roundup on mini tractors - guys obviously contractors in green cotton boiler suits- no gloves- no masks/glasses- no signs- It's a joke:thumbdown:
