I only got my tickets on a 10 week course in 2008 but....

My Frenchy business partner and I have full diaries.

I am training him to climb on trees where the risks are low.

I enjoy being a groundy and a climber.

Today, Seb would'nt come down!

"My turn" I was yelling at him!

We split the take.

Today, no chipping only stacking brush and crosscutting the oaks we dismantled for €480

Thats approx £200 each... cash.

Some people are better at business some at climbing trees. Match the 2 together and you have a good business.

 

Some subbies like working for different companies, don't want employment with just one company and don't want the hassle of running there own company.

People make a living out of climbing for other people their is nothing wrong with this

What a load of cack. I am selling a service. Whether I climb myself or a subbie climbs for me provided the job is done as the customer wants and those involved get paid, job done.

 

What about the utility clearance companies. Do you really think those doing the negotiations to get the contracts know how to climb and hold the UA tickets? I doubt it. Maybe they shouldn't be getting the work for those that can climb

I've recently seen gardening/landscape companies hiring in subbie climbers for big jobs, this cheapens our job and takes work away from legit arb companies. It means that the gardening companies dont have to do all the work, ie NPTC certs, training and equipment we've all worked for years to get, but then thats the free market right, so who cares, lets just do our own thing and let them get on with it.

In short I brought in specialists to do things I couldn’t. None of the specialists reacted like you.

bet the local demolition companies were well pleased with a tree surgeon taking on the work they've trained and equipped themselves for and specialised in for years?

I agree with Tim up to a point, but see nothing wrong in using freelance climbers for some jobs.

 

I wouldn't send a climber up a tree I wouldn't climb myself, but money is the overriding factor in my business.

 

If I need an extra man for a tricky dismantle I find I'm better off hiring a decent climber than an extra groundie. Lets me run the show, get the job done quicker (I'm not the fastest climber), wear my haggard old body out less, and make more money.

 

We usually have a good crack doing it.

 

I am against subnuts with no arb skills or insurance using freelancers to depress prices even further than they already are.

 

Yes, I've climbed for people like this a lot over the years. You live and learn.
