Posted this on the Buzz too .....

Michael Taylor of Trinity County in California just made available a new tree height measuring technique. The math is way beyond my ability. But thought some folks might like to see what he's been working on.

At least today, if you scroll to the end of the equation, there is a link to download the Excel spreadsheet. Enable macros.

Apparently, Taylor has had this on the mental back burner since like the 1990s.

It's so easy - all you need to do is click on the 'download to excel option and you're away.

Then you canthrow away your inconvenient little stick (which is usually only accurate to within half a metre) and just carry round a grand's worth of laptop (which will not get damaged in the cab) and after just an hours measuring, climbing over fences and walls, youve got a precise measurement. I'm going for it.

When do you have to be that accurate in normal circumstances?

(tape measure and clinometer does me)

The method is for some other than normal circumstances.

If basic clinometer or laser would work, that's what Taylor will usually use.

The diagram on his page does not show the rest of the forest or obstacles.

Thanks for that - so when would 'some' circumstances arise?

I'm genuinely interested to know when this level of accuracy would be required (and wouldn't be negated by the same forest, movement caused by wind etc.)
