Public speaking- time to get help!

Recommended Posts

O.K this is becoming a serious issue, my fear of ppublic speaking, and I need help.:blushing:

I know the usual advice imagine they are all naked etc, but has anyone done any specific training or have any particularly good advice on breaking this confidence issue?

Im great in small groups, and want to be able to do the same at seminars.

I now have 2 parties badgering me to present on certain issues and i do not want to turn them down.

I need to sort this out and pretty soon!

It isnt the fear of my info or subject, its a fear within of looking a complete arse!

thanks for any advice given:thumbup1:

Tony, just be secure in knowing that you know a hell of a lot about your subject and they are there to learn from you. :001_smile:

What I know is VERY little, what i suspect i am good at is inspiring others, that may be the key to why I am being asked.:001_huh:

there is a massive void between these things, knowing and being able to inspire!

Unless you go down the route of specific training then the first big one will always be daunting, no matter what.

Your greatest assest teaching wise, will be your imagery, which is first class.

Get very comfy (or trained) with power point and let what you have seen & captured be your audiences main interaction.

Throw in description/explination commentary during, and that will be all that is really needed.

By far the very best seminars I attend (& that is quite a few) are the ones with the best imagery. Lonsdale/Body/Perciva/Mattheck, et al

You will naturally enjoy the questions/debate after presentation ('cause you're a confrontational bleeder)

Over dialogued ones, tend to lose the audience from my experience.

It matters not whether you are more knowledgable or not. You're not there to lecture but to pass on enthusiasm and encourage thinking. I think the best way to overcome nerves is to get your audience involved by them asking questions. It then becomes more of a conversation than an address.

Oh... and make sure you're pockets are empty.

Thats some good pointers, and kind of what i had thought, but what if there is a Tony S in the audience and I get grilled scientifically speaking and fail to understand the tone, i will lose all credibility and I cannot slip up, not once, for when i do arbor ecology will suffer.

The bit I highlighted, it is my strength, I will one day know what i need to know to take on the academics in their own way, and when I can, i will win the war against the narrow minded sanitation of Gaia.:001_smile:

I will win because I speak the truth.

There's recently been a thread here re the prog Wonders of the Universe; one of the things that struck many was the passion of the presenter. I'm sure you're the same. Don't stand still, vary your voice and keep being passionate; it's catching. Great orators are born, not made I believe, so if you're not one don't try to be one; just do what you are good at.

Theres only one what that worked for me and that was throwing myself in at the deep end. Maybe 300 people as few notes as possible and ad lib as much as i could. Was bricking it, but it went really well and public speaking doesn't bother me too much now.

It helps when there are people who know the subject well.

also tart with a joke

or just get wasted before hand........

yeah bricking it would be how i would describe it, I had no idea of this fear till I stood to give my well rehearsed best mans speech, cocky as hell till on my feet, then turned into a jibbering wreck, THAT is not a situation i care to repeat and that was in at the deep end!
