I think i would agree with populus alba * am using a book as i am new to this but its fun when one of these comes up*

 

"fruit: small green capsules borne in catkins 4in (10cm) long opening to release tiny seeds held in white cotton wool like hairs."

 

i dont think it will be in fruit but the cotton wool like hairs look right.

 

 

please correct me if i am wrong

That refers to the seeds, not the catkins that are present now. Might be a Grey poplar, as it has a more upright growth habit than the white.
