Ident Help Please!!!

At first glance I thought this tree was some kind of poplar, then I noticed these catkins. I haven't got a clue but I'm sure this will be easy for most of you, Thanks.

it is a poplar, balsum possibly, aint sure without the book

I think i would agree with populus alba * am using a book as i am new to this but its fun when one of these comes up*

i dont think it will be in fruit but the cotton wool like hairs look right.

That refers to the seeds, not the catkins that are present now. Might be a Grey poplar, as it has a more upright growth habit than the white.

It's got no leaves on it. Must be knackered. Fell it!

 

I would think some type of poplar. But could it be a type of birch? Would only think that because of what's there. But they seem too fluffy to be birch.
