To Mulch, or not to Mulch?

Recommended Posts

Cheap means of aerating and inoculating soil include swinging a pick or iron pry bar into the soil and bending it in 4 directions, followed by a blasting with the garden hose.

Will try and see how it works... thanks for the tip!:thumbup1:

.........or the panic of a tired old thing before it expires

Don't be like that: I've been extolling the virtues of this process to anyone who'll listen. I now have a queue of three trees awaiting the treatment so can do without egg on my face thank you very much:001_tongue:

Further I've also converted the owner of a large landscaped garden to chipping instead of burning; he now has several heaps of chip awaiting winter dispersal. So a big big smiley after that comment please.

The tree is doing well enough and is set to be subject of some guidance on veteran orchard tree management.

Oh yes; mine too.

I still find this thread a huge feelgood, especially as I've had a similar result with an 8' tall apple!:blushing:

A (noticeable) increase in epicormic activity throughout the canopy and on the trunk and both saprophytic and mycorrhizal fungi within the mulch bed.

David, when you say micorrhizal are you saying youve located nodes? or fruiting bodies? was I mistaken in thinking Pear is endo or maybe ectendro (undetermined )
