For power tools, then Makita all the way.

With regard to Silverline sockets etc- you say they're popular. That's because they're the best value on the market today. Forge Steel (screwfix own) have shot up in price over the last year, and looking at the castings Silverline seem to use the same factory for a lot of the stuff.

Never understood the obsession with Snap On and the like (Draper Expert in particular- the ratchet is clunky old fashioned rubbish). Good tools but not value for money when compared to Silverline unless you use them every minute of every day. Have used Silverline 1/2" breaker bar, Silverline 32mm socket and a five foot scaffold pole to crack tractor wheel nuts before, without breaking the tool. Very good kit.

You'll struggle to find a better, more versatile 1/4" socket set than Silverline.

Halfords Professional are also nice tools.

ow one make i forgot about is hilti,,, but you can only get them direct, they are expensive but they are built to last, i have a hilti breaker that belonged to a demolition company befor i owned it. and it still works perfectly, but for tools you can buy in a shop,, it has to be makita, then dewalt and hitachi

i always go for cheap, thats just the way i am, and i have no complaints at all, i never expect the tools to be as good as the expensive range ones, but i buy them to do a purpose and dont abuse them... too much :)

I have a lot of rolson tools and they are great imo

axes i have cheap unbranded mauls why spend loads when these work fine? its beyond me, and an oregon felling axe, great bit of kit

When you get older, you realise what is worth spending money on and where you can get away with just buying the cheapest you can.

Knowing the difference is an expensive process called 'experience'.

Couldn't agree more. It varies from person to person.

Bentley Continental? No thanks. For that money I'll have a Fendt 936!
