The only issue I can think of with the rip cut when reducing etc is its hard to judge just how far it will 'rip'. This means there's an element of uncertainty, just a thought.

 

 

Comes with experience i think. Using insulated rods to cut branches in utility work is a rip cut only technique - try doing an undercut with 10 rods!

Excuse my ignorance but what is this spear cut?

 

A cut made diagonally cutting straight through so that the wood falls butt first. Obviously need to be careful of not being hit by the tip ( or at least be prepared to) or not to do to big for reasons such us barber chairs or it turning into a rip cut. but is a good cut in the right circumstances
