The only issue I can think of with the rip cut when reducing etc is its hard to judge just how far it will 'rip'. This means there's an element of uncertainty, just a thought.

Comes with experience i think. Using insulated rods to cut branches in utility work is a rip cut only technique - try doing an undercut with 10 rods!

I can imagine, I've never had to work near live lines luckily, making a mistake could be quite shocking! (Sorry. Best I can do at the end of a week)

Just to clarify though - that's just to get the branch down, the stub is then taken back to the branch collar, as per bs3998 ;)

Anyway, as you were TREESURGEONESSEX !

I love my rip cuts , once you get a feel for them and understand what you can and cant get away with then they can save you a lot of time . also as stated some species are better then others. ....., banters great on this thread btw.

Not necessarily, you use it when needed, whether its a dismantle, crown lift, reduction... Just don't try it 5cm from the branch collar

Good call Alex.

Nothing more shameful than asking for a bucket of mud to be sent up....

Excuse my ignorance but what is this spear cut?

A cut made diagonally cutting straight through so that the wood falls butt first. Obviously need to be careful of not being hit by the tip ( or at least be prepared to) or not to do to big for reasons such us barber chairs or it turning into a rip cut. but is a good cut in the right circumstances

I may be wrong but to me it's cutting through an upright branch so fast it drops cut first into the ground. (Good on Lombardies)
