Emotive stuff huh? Anyway, attack the arguement and not the person please. Not only is it logically unsound, it undermines the sanctity of the principles which both sides hold dear. I would also like to suggest also that you give your fellow members the benefit of the doubt where possible; forums are not perfect communication mediums and meanings can be misconstrued.

Well put I've embarrassingly let myself get involved in pointless arguments on here before

but I've watched this closely and stayed clear because I can appreciate both sides Hama and Stephens posts in particular, I see them both as experts in their field and I think they do each other :)

They have lived with this tree for 42 years, their kids have played in it, their grand kids have played around it.

How many of you can look back on your years of work, and recognize that one of the greatest dangers to a trees existence is old folks.

I dont want to generalise but Yes totally agree, there seems to be on a whole a real fear maybe even a hatred to any thing that will out live them!!!

That's is the reason I went self employed ...it drove me mad ! company i worked for sub contracting to councils we worked at all the old peoples homes every tree they wanted felled, the reasons light , leaves and fear .... I remember dead wooding and raising an amazing ash I would of loved to of retired there and sat under that tree on a summers day but instead I was presented with a petition when I left the canopy, every one wanting the tree felled that doubled with every other tree I had worked on in EPD's in the last month I was presented with just cut it down comments I lost finally lost it with this petition presented to me ...unfortunately now It has become clear in my mind if people wish to fell there trees there is not a lot stopping them apart from tpo's and if I got tpo's put on every tree I didn't agree with felling I would not be in buisness.

Your quite right there.

They probably have a lot more time to worry about stuff, and obvioulsy complain too!

Has indeed been an interesting thread.

I would have no probs in removing a tree like that, Ive removed far healthier and possibly 'better' trees in the name of construction.

Not saying it isnt a shame and would also be good if a nice bit of furniture could be made from it or a carving.

I have probably seen big beech fail and drop big limbs more than any other species.

I wonder though if the reactions would be the same if it was a scabby old poplar?
