Petrol Vs. Electric?

Heya guys,

 

Im currently doing a project on petrol against electric saws... Stihl have brought out a battery powered hedgetrimmer. Our company have invested in the machine and have to admit, its a rather good piece off kit; quick charging and fairly long usuage on the battery, lightweight and also comfortable to use. But will it be developed further?

 

What are your thoughts on electic chainsaws? Do you think Stihl or another company may introduce a battery powered chainsaw? Or will petrol always be the best option?

think there are some battery powered chainsaws out there, sure i've spotted some on ebay.... could be wrong though

Yeah, Black & Decker make a few and i think Makita do aswell. But they dont look brilliant... they take hours to charge up and only last about half an hour. Im wondering if the technology from Stihl's battery hedgetrimmer will be put into a chainsaw?

I got a demo (at the IOG Saltex) of some battery powered kit made by Pellenc which is disturbuted by Etesia the Italian mower company. Excellent working time per battery, you can get pole saws, etc as attachments and ligth to use. Biggest against is the cost - we are talking 400-500 per battery from memory. Google the Etesia web site, I think they are on it.

 

This machines are really in a different league compared to the small rechargeable battery stuff from Stihl and Echo.

stihl's battery saw is out in germany and should be here sometime this year...

Also you can't beat the sound of a saw running flat out.

it still burns oil at some point,, by that i mean how is the electricity that is used to charge it made? from a power station powered by..... oil/ coal/ etc etc...

not my cup of tea... i might buy one once the planet is sucked dry of oil.... but there will likely be more pressing matters...

My father's got a B&D battery chainsaw; mainly 'cos he's got a phobia of anything with a two stroke engine. Something to do with the fact that he buys cheap things, leaves them with fuel in over a winter, then wonders why they won't start with the first two tugs...

 

Anyway, the saw - battery too small and takes too long to charge, then will only cut for about 5-10 mins. Bar is mega short (about 4 inch). The one thing I could see them being useful for is climbing and lopping off branches, just because they are light and small.

the stihl batery saw would be good for construction but no good other than working in your garden every now and then i recon, also it looks like a toy
