No protection = numpty!

Was out on Friday night having a meal with some guys I shoot clays with. One of them commented how he had given his chainsaw to the lad who works for him so he could do some work in his garden and when he got it back it was not running right. I said that I hoped he had also given the lad his ppe (knowing full well he does not have any). I could not believe the reply I got - "What do you need all that safety gear for? I wear a pair of goggles and have never had an accident in 30 years of using a saw. You're just like those namby pamby health and safety types."

 

Whilst I am no pro, have only had CS30 and 31 for just under a year, I would have thought commen sense would tell you to use full safety equipment when using one of the most dangerous tools in the world. When I told him it was more good luck that he had not had an accident and that goggles would provide next to no protection, he shouted me down and then proceeded to state he was flabbergasted when he took the saw in to the local chainsaw specialists, they refused to sell him a new saw as he had no proof of competence, ie CS30/31.

 

And I used to think he was intelligent!

its true, a top handled saw is the only1 they need to see your tickets for, a chainsaw is the most dangerous tool your dont have to have a licence for.

Not a great decision but hardly the end of the world, when i'm using a chainsaw track building or something whilst hopping in and out of a digger theres no PPE involved other than boots, unless its winter when i'll be wearing type C's anyway just to keep warm. but him being a bit grumpy about it seems a bit harsh as your clearly talking sense.

some of the thing we see here in france are really bad, at the weekend i was talking from behind the bar in my girlfriends bar, to a guy with a baseball cap all cut up on his head, his mate said how you get your hat like that???

the respoce was " i was felling for firewood this morning, saw kicked up and whoosh..... my cap shot off across the wood"....... the peak of the hat was half cut through and a line of holes up the top...... he was so lucky not to have lost half his face!

 

a little later his mate from the hunt came in and was moaning at him that there was nothing about because he had been making so much noise with his saw and the respoce was "oh you should have come over, i had plenty of beers to go round!"

 

i think some of the heath and safety rules i hear about in the UK are abit over the top, people dont think for themselfs so it almost makes more accidents because people jsut follow the rules without thinking, but here in france it is in need of a minimum of health and safety!!

As for the topic i happen to see lots of this kinda thing but i think we are all guilty of bending the advice ocasionally but there is bending it and then being stupid !

 

personal pet hate is footwear i dont care what people wear in a workshop or site long as its steel toed ! just to many times i see contracrtors and installers wearing trainers etc wagon drivers machine operators

 

like the google or safety specs and hearing protection (loud machinery) when using saws drills chisels and cut of saws especialy on building sites you get one pair of eyes and you cant grow new ones and hearing is difficult to fix ! !

Hey rovers 90, there is no helping some, and no hope for them either. There are a gazillion know-it-alls out there who 'have been using a saw for 30 years without an accident' etc etc....they'll never change, and will always be on the defensive when criticised. Its just not worth getting bothered by them.
