Are your readings for vibration taken 'live' as in when the saws cutting wood over the day?

 

In my experence of HAV monitoring when i had a bit of an experiment using a 357xpg 2006 vintage. New bar a chain cutting gave the 8 hour plus a day safe reading. Well sharpened gave the same reading but not quite as vibe free. A chain with the edge knocked off gave some 6 hours and a bit blunter still gave 2 hours. Oh and a very blunt chain gave about 30 mins!

 

Yes readings are taken live, we’ll be carrying out the tests in our wood-yard. I’ve debated whether to replace A/V rubbers, sprockets and chains for the test but decided against it as I want the tests to reflect ‘real world’ conditions.

 

I’ve had the saws tested before and one thing I have noticed is the difference between manufactures vibration levels and the actual vibration levels as tested on site. We have a brand new 441 ready to test so this will be particularly interesting..

Without de-valuing the tests going on as they will prove valuable to many members, my basic test is to put the saw on a concrete floor and start it, if it moves all over the place its AV is not the best and if it stays put, all is good - I have no figures but the Husqvarna 345, 346, 350, 357 series of saws have some of the best AV and don't walk once started!

 

I personally use a muffler modded 345 for my logs - wearing ear defenders:thumbup: - the AV is excellent.

I would be interested, my, hands are suffering really badly, they hurt in the cold and go blue, I'm to young for white finger (26) but have been using saws since i was 15. I was going to go doctor but knew they would only say use saw less and take more breaks

 

 

Short bars on small saws with heated handels. Also use the the lower vibe chains. I use a 346xpg with 21LP or 21BP chain depending on what i'm cutting.

Just a few pictures from today’s HAV testing. The test is carried out by attaching sensors on the front and rear handle of the saws, two readings are taken whilst cutting takes place; a calculation is then made to give the optimum daily usage.

we have had all ours done several times.

Think its interesting how you can vary the results

Ie what wood and diameter

but sharpening angles even depth guage and chain tightness more so ect ect

even a worn sprocket or chain

Guessing you could get that saw from around 4 hrs use down to 20 mins without trying to be silly and down to 5 mins if you want to take the micky

This is the monitoring equipment for the saws - Each member of staff had been issued with a credit-type card which you swipe on the base unit at the start of the day. A HAV monitoring unit is the assigned to that member of staff who would then attach it on to individual saws throughout the day.
