I think that as professionals with pride in what we do, when we come across people getting it wrong when trying to save money, we do tend to say how stupid they were not to get a professional to do it in the first place. However there are only a few thousand members of Arbtalk, and they represent a tiny percentage of the population, and threads/ posts regarding the stupidity of joe public are a small percentage of the number of posts on the forum....so, what i am saying is that I would say No to your question, but of the public who get it wrong, through basic errors of judgement or lack of common sense, the answer is yes.:001_smile:

Welcome to the forum BTW.:thumbup1:

I only trust 2 people. One of them is me, and your not the other one, comes to mind. Again, seen/heard of too many stupid incidents of the GP buggering themselves to trust folk without experiencing them myself. The same for "tree men" too.

So it is all of us that are assuming things:001_rolleyes:

Yes Joe public should not be allowed to use chainsaws without training..or buy them. Had a guy near me killed himself cutting a tree down in his garden last week, he bought the saw that day and had never used a saw before. Chainsaw are lethal in the wrong hands. Even just using them for logging..safety clothing must be worn, chainsaw boots & trousers. I will never ever use my saw without the safety gear on, ive had a few close ones with a saw, and my chainsaw trousers have saved me.

If your chainsaw trousers have saved you then maybe you shouldn't be using a saw either!!

No - I don't think all members of the public are fools when it comes to using a chainsaw.

I also don't think that all professional chainsaw users are beyond reproach either.

I think that after the skills have been learned and practised - you still have to choose when and how to use them. It is at THIS point that the true professionals come to the fore. Judgement.

Hi, my first post:biggrin:, i think this is a very good forum for anyone interested in prosessing their own firewood, however it seems to me the pros out there automatically assume that joe public should never be allowed anywhere near a chainsaw.I myself have and still do use chainsaws without any training to cut firewood and i think i am quite safe doing so, i feel its a bit unfair to tar everyone with the same brush , before i had to finish work (on health grounds) i was in the plant hire game and had to have a fare amount of common sence did some very tricky jobs over the years just useing experence and common sence, would like to here your thorghts, ones again gr8 forum:thumbup:

I appreciate what you're saying. But bear in mind even the pros with all the gear, knowledge and training have accidents. When using your chainsaw do you have the basic PPE? i.e. trousers, boots, helmet?

Most people that use a chainsaw with no training feel quite safe to do so.

If you have the cash could you not just do the basic certs?
